Hans Riegel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Riegel (born January 1, 1923 in Bonn, Germany) has owned and operated candy purveyor Haribo since 1946. He is the oldest son of the company's founder Hans Riegel, Sr. In 1951 he did his doctorate at Bonn University with a thesis about ‘the development of the world sugar industry during and after the Second World War’ (German original title: „Die Entwicklung der Weltzuckerwirtschaft während und nach dem 2. Weltkrieg“).

In 1953 he was elected first president of the German badminton association (Deutscher Badminton-Verband) after he had won the German championship in the men's doubles and mixed doubles (which he did in following two years, as well). In the very same year he had the first indoors badminton court in Germany (called the ‘Haribo-Center’) built in Bonn.
