Hang Tuah station

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hang Tuah station is a set of train stations in Klang Valley that is served by the Ampang Line and Sri Petaling Line at one station, as well as by the KL Monorail at another.

The Ampang Line and Sri Petaling Line interchange poorly with KL Monorail station despite being located just opposite each other.

These stations are built to cater the increasing traffic volume in Kuala Lumpur and the surrounding areas.

Located in the vicinity of the station are the Victoria Institution, the former Pudu Prison, Hang Tuah police station and Stadium Negara.

[edit] Hang Tuah LRT station

The Hang Tuah LRT station was opened in 1996, along with 17 other station as part of Phase 1 of System 1. System 1 referred to the LRT concession operated by Sistem Transit Aliran Ringan, while Phase 1 referred to the stretch of LRT from Ampang to Sultan Ismail. Phase 2 referred to the branch line from Chan Sow Lin to Sri Petaling LRT station as well as the extension from Sultan Ismail to Sentul Timur.

In 2005, the services operated by Star were renamed the Sri Petaling Line and the Ampang Line.

Many parts of Phase 1 of System 1 were built on the long abandoned Pudu railway line, including the Hang Tuah LRT station.

Over the years, a bridge was constructed over the old railway line to allow traffic on Jalan Hang Tuah to cross the tracks. As a result of this the LRT crosses Jalan Hang Tuah from below. The Hang Tuah LRT station is located next to this bridge over the railway line. It is also located below the Jalan Hang Tuah street level.

[edit] Hang Tuah Monorail station

Hang Tuah monorail station was opened in 2003 along with the rest of the KL Monorail system.

[edit] Criticism

Just like at most other train interchanges in Kuala Lumpur, the Ampang and Sri Petaling Lines interchange poorly with the KL Monorail system despite being located almost next to each other. Transfering involves exiting stations, walking up and down escalators and stairs and purchasing new tickets. Covered walkways to link both stations are also limited and insufficient to protect commuters from heavy rain.
