The Hamilton Thunderbirds Baseball Club were known as the Hamilton Cardinals for many years. Starting in the 2005 Intercounty Baseball League season, the team changed its name to the Hamilton Thunderbirds. The name change came to be when Mel Oswald, CEO of the Canadian Thunderbirds Elite Baseball Club, bought the Hamilton Cardinals on February 24, 2005. The "new" Thunderbirds played their first game with the new name on May 8, 2005, defeating the Stratford Storm 14-7.
The Hamilton Cardinals had played 1,490 games with a record of 525 wins and 965 losses before becoming the Thunderbirds, winning the Intercounty title in 1978.
