Half-Life Dedicated Server

"Half-Life Dedicated Server" (HLDS) is the software that powers many of the older Steam games.

A GoldSrc or Source engine based multiplayer game can be hosted in three different ways:

1. Inside the Windows game client, using the "New Game" button
2. Using a the Steam-based dedicated server
3. Using a standalone dedicated server

Most high-performance servers use the latter case. The Windows version of the standalone Dedicated server can be run in both the graphical user interface and console modes, however there is a Linux version. It can only run in console mode, due to the fact of there being difficulties in making frontends that work with the program.

1. The user can create a server for which other people across the globe can join
2. The user can administrate the server without actually needing the game itself
3. The user can promote the clan that they belong to

[edit] How to Acquire

The user can acquire HLDS through multiple sources. The user may receive it through the Steam content delivery system, off the Steampowered.com website, or off of some of the many mirrored copies of the installer.

Each game has its required files hosted on the Valve content servers, along with all of the other games available on the Valve servers. When given the appropriate command each game capable of running a server through HLDS can have the sources downloaded and then used.

To acquire the Steam-based HLDS, one must simply go to the tools section in their Steam client and install the “Half-Life Dedicated Server”, which is not to be confused with the “Source Dedicated Server”. The Source Dedicated Server is for running a server for games based on the Source engine. However, the standalone Dedicated Server can run any Valve-hosted multiplayer game based on either engine.

The standalone version can be found on this page. It contains links usually found in the bottom right-hand corner of the page. The upsides of this version of the program are that the user doesn’t need to have the game installed on the computer, and that there is no need to have Steam installed on the computer.
