Haleyville, Alabama

Haleyville is a city in Winston County, Alabama, United States. Haleyville was originally named Davis Cross Roads, as it was established at the crossroads of Byler Road[1] and the Illinois Central Railroad. The name was later changed to Haleyville, after the Haley Brothers, who were among the first to open a business in the town. At the 2000 census the population was 4,182.

On February 16, 1968 the first 9-1-1 emergency telephone system in the nation went into service in Haleyville. A popular local rumor states that the first emergency call on the system involved a pregnant woman reporting that her water had broken. The dispachers misunderstood the nature of the emergency and sent a plumber to her home.

Haleyville City Schools operates grade schools and a career training center. Haleyville High School's mascot is the Lions, and the school colors are Red and White.

Haleyville is located at 34°13′48″N, 87°37′8″W (34.230131, -87.618978)GR1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.2 km² (7.4 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 4,182 people, 1,815 households, and 1,148 families residing in the city. The population density was 217.6/km² (563.9/mi²). There were 2,061 housing units at an average density of 107.2/km² (277.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.81% White, 1.48% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 2.68% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 3.11% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,815 households out of which 26.6% had children under the age of 52 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 34.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.87.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 86.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $24,907, and the median income for a family was $33,875. Males had a median income of $27,028 versus $18,312 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,139. About 18.9% of families and 23.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 35.9% of those under age 18 and 20.9% of those age 65 or over.
