From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the fictional universe of the Deryni novels of Katherine Kurtz, Haldane is a royal duchy located in the center of the Kingdom of Gwynedd. Originally founded as a small, independent county in the fifth century, it was the predecessor state upon which the Kingdom of Gwynedd was built. It is also the surname of the royal family of Gwynedd.

[edit] Geography

The Crown Duchy of Haldane lies near the center of the Kingdom of Gwynedd, bordered to the north by the Eirian River. The Lendour Mountains to the east separate Haldane from the Duchy of Corwyn, while the Duchy of Carthmoor and the Earldom of Carthane lie along its southern border. The western lands of Meara and The Connait lie beyond the defunct Duchy of Travlum. The capital of Haldane is the city of Rhemuth, which also serves as the capital of the entire kingdom.

[edit] History

Note: For a complete history, see History of Gwynedd

Like much of the rest of the Eleven Kingdoms, the lands of Haldane were originally conquered by the Byzantyun Empire in the third century. Following their withdrawal in 408, the County of Haldane was formed on June 30, 411, by Halbert the Dane, who later became known as The Haldane. Over the next two centuries, the lands of Haldane gradually expanded as Halbert's descendants successfully battled their neighbors. In 645, Count Augarin II conquered Carthane and incorporated the lands of Haldane and Carthane into a single realm, declaring himself High King of Haldane. In 647, Augarin formally changed the name of his kingdom to Gwynedd.

Within the larger kingdom, the original lands of Haldane serve a royal duchy. Situated near the center of the realm around the capital of Rhemuth, the lands of Haldane are traditionally controlled directly by the Crown.
