Haggerty Connector
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The so-called "Haggerty Connector" is the north-south portion of M-5 connecting the Commerce Township, Michigan, USA area in central Oakland County in the metropolitan Detroit area. This highway is officially designated as an "expressway," meaning no private access is allowed and access can only be gained at one of a select few intersecting roads at-grade with traffic lights. This spur state trunkline route begins at the I-96/I-696/M-5/I-275 junction.
The "Haggerty Connector" was constructed in the right-of-way originally purchased and reserved for an extension of I-275 from I-96 in Novi northerly through central Oakland County, returning to I-75 northwest of Pontiac. Due to a variety of factors, including public opposition and the existence of protected wetlands and other environmentally-sensitive areas, the original I-275 proposal was cancelled in the 1970s. While built in a right-of-way originally set aside for a freeway, this portion of M-5 is largely built to expressway standards and serves as a commuter highway for residents in southwestern Oakland County.
