[edit] Narration
According to Sahih Bukhari, Muhammad said:
- He who does not recognise the Imam of his age and leaves this world dies the death of ignorance. [citation needed]Abu Dawod narrates that Muhammad said:
- Who so ever denies the Imam of the age and passes away, he dies the death of Jahiliya (ignorance). (Kanzul Ammal) [citation needed]
[edit] Views
[edit] Sunni view
The Sunnis interpret it as to mean that one should obey his contemporary ruler and others interpret it to mean your religious leader or the leader of an association (like one that's calling for change).
[edit] Shi'a view
It is used by the Shia to justify their belief in Shia Imams. They reject the view that the mentioned imam is any generic religious or earthly authority, since they reject that Islam would demand one to pledge allegiance to a sinner. Shi'a also observe that the hadith is addressing all people, even people of this current era.
