[edit] Nikah Ijtimah
A narration attributed to A'isha reports:
| There were four types of marriage during the Pre-Islamic period of ignorance. One type was similar to that of the present day, i.e. a man used to ask somebody else for the hand of a girl under his guardianship or for his daughter's hand". Another type of marriage was that a group of less than ten men would assemble and enter upon a women, and all of them would have sexual relations with her. If she became pregnant and delivered a child and some days had passed after her delivery, she would send for all of them and none of them could refuse to come, and when they all gathered before her she would say to them "You (all) know what you have done and now I have given birth to a child. So it is your child O so and so! Naming whoever she liked and her child would follow him and he could not refuse to take him. [1] |
[edit] Nikah Mut'ah
Also, there are some hadith claiming Nikah Mut'ah as a pre-Islamic marriage form. Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, a 20th century Sunni Islamic scholar wrote:
| The reality is this, of the practices that existed during the jahiliyya, Nikah Mut'ah was also one, a women would be given a gift, would then be married for a specific time. The approach of Rasulullah (s) was that he would not deem a practise to be abrogated, until Allah (swt) revealed a specific order to him, rather he would maintain silence, or would even permit his adherents to adhere to it subject to circumstance, until a Surah was revealed in connection with Mut'ah. In the beginning he remained silent, but when on travel or Jihad people highlighted their sexual frustrations, Rasulullah (s) permitted it as an order had not yet been revealed to Rasulullah (s). When the order cam he outlawed it, but this order did not reach the ears of all the people, which is why some people due to their ignorance continued to practise Mut'ah. Finally, Umar in his reign enforced the order with complete strength.[2] |
The two marriage forms used after Muhammad proclaimed his prophethood are Nikah Mut'ah and Nikah.

Presumably, regular Nikah was one of the marriage forms.
