Hadith of Qur'an and Sunnah

Hadith of Qur'an and Sunnah is a hadith in Sahih Muslim about a Mutawatir event in a pond in Khumm.

Sunni use it to show the importance of following the Sunnah.

According to the hadith, Muhammad said in Ghadir Khumm:

"I have left amongst you two things which, if you hold fast to them, you will never stray: the Book of Allah, and my Sunnah."

Sunni deem it as Sahih.

al-Shafi'i said in Al-Risalah, Eng. trans., p. 111:

"I have heard the most knowledgeable people about the Qur'an say that the Wisdom is the Sunnah"

Sunnis also say that the meaning of the hadith is contained in the Qur'an, in the mention of the Book and Wisdom (2:129, 2:151, 2:231, 3:164, 4:113, 33:34 & 62:2);

[edit] Shi'a view

Shi'a marvel that Sunnis deem this Ahahd hadith as sahih, while at the same time claiming that the Hadith of the two weighty things is also Sahih, even though they are supposed to be said at the same occasion.

At the same time, Shi'a do agree with the meaning of the hadith, even if they deem it a fabrication. They mean that this version does not mention which channel to use to access the Sunnah, something that the Hadith of the two weighty things makes unambiguosly clear. Also, Shi'a observe that Sunnis prefer to use an Ahahd narration, rather than what the Shi'a claim to be a Mutawatir narration, only since the Mutawatir one refers to the Ahl al-Bayt.
