This is a sub-article to the Succession to Muhammad

A famous recorded oral tradition among Muslims (Arabic: Hadith) is about the rank of Fatima Zahra, the only surviving daughter of Muhammad.

Although the narration is prominently quoted and referred to, it is not given any formal name, in contrast to other hadith such as the Hadith of the pond of Khumm or the Hadith of Qur'an and Sunnah

A narration attributed to Aisha reports:

Once Fatima came walking and her gait resembled the gait of the Prophet.

The Prophet said, "Welcome, O my daughter!" Then he made her sit on his right or on his left side, and then he told her a secret and she started weeping. I asked her, "Why are you weeping?" He again told her a secret and she started laughing.

I said, "I never saw happiness so near to sadness as I saw today." I asked her what the Prophet had told her. She said, "I would never disclose the secret of Allah's Apostle ."

When the Prophet died, I asked her about it. She replied. "The Prophet said, 'Every year Gabriel used to revise the Qur'an with me once only, but this year he has done so twice. I think this portends my death, and you will be the first of my family to follow me.' So I started weeping. Then he said. 'Don't you like to be the mistress of all the ladies of Paradise or the mistress of all the lady believers? So I laughed for that.

Sunnis tend to view this as Sahih and have included it in Sahih Bukhari^[1]

A narration attributed to Anas ibn Malik reports:

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Sufficient for you among the women of the world are Maryam the daughter of ‘Imraan. Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, Fatimah bint Muhammad and Aasiyah the wife of Pharaoh."

Sunnis tend to view this as Sahih and have included it in Sunan al-Tirmidhi ^[2]

A narration attributed to `Abd Allah ibn `Abbas reports:

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) drew four lines on the ground, then he said, "Do you know what this is?" We said, "Allaah and His Messenger know best." The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "The best of the women of Paradise are Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid, Faatimah bint Muhammad, Aasiyah bint Mazaahim the wife of Pharaoh, and Maryam bint ‘Imraan – may Allaah be pleased with them."

Sunnis tend to view this as Sahih ^[3] and have included it in Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal ^[4]

A narration attributed to `Abd Allah ibn `Abbas reports:

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH&HF) said: Four women are the mistress of the worlds: Mary, Asiya (the wife of Pharaoh), Khadija, and Fatimah. And the most excellent one among them in the world is Fatimah."

Sunnis tend to view this as ? and have included it in Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal ^[5]

Muslims view this hadith as notable and important on several accounts. First, it retells an emotional moment in the lives of two prominent people, and the strong bond among them. Secondly, It makes two prophecies, the death of Muhammad, and also the death of his daughter. Thirdly, the hadith credits Fatima with a very high status.

Shi'a often refer to this narratios, for example when arguing her high status in Fatima the Gracious ^[6], or arguing that it is not improbable that she could talk to to the Angel Gabriel, with regards to the Book of Fatimah, since the Qur'an states that Virgin Mary also talked to same angels^[7].
