Hacienda Napoles

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(Spanish for Naples State) was the luxurious state built and owned by colombian drug dealer Pablo Escobar in Puerto Triunfo, Antioquia (320 kms NW from Bogotá) with about 2000 ha.

It included a spanish colonial house and had a complete zoo that included all kind of animals from all continents like giraffes, ostriches, elephants, ponies, rare antelopes and exotic birds. The ranch had a large collection of old and luxurious cars and bikes, and even a private airport and a carts racing track. The Colombian government expropiated this property to Pablo Escobar and gave it to the poor after Escobar's death on December 2nd, 1993. In recent years, Escobar's family was in a legal struggle to get back the property.

[edit] Trivia

  • The entrance has Escobar's first plane as decoration. It is the first plane full of cocaine Escobar took to the United States.
  • The car where Bonnie and Clyde were shot by police was purchased by Escobar and he had it as a treasure exhibited in the zoo.
  • There are some dinosaur statues in a section of the state. Escobar had a dream of building a theme park with life-sized dinosaurs but the plans were never completed.
  • The cost of the maintenance of the zoo and the animals were too expensive to the government so they decided to donate most of the animals to colombian and international zoos. The last survivors were the hippopotamuses that grew wild. Now there are plans to take them to a Costa Rican zoo.
