H. S. Garcia

H.S. "Buddy" Garcia was born in Corpus Christi, Texas and grew up in Brownsville, Texas. The third of four children, Buddy Garcia graduated from Saint Joseph Academy having been involved in a variety of sports including football, basketball and baseball. Garcia attended Texas A&I University, now Texas A&M, transferred to Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State University, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science. From there, he moved to Austin, Texas and served as the legislative director for Senator Eddie Lucio. Later he was appointed as border policy advisor to Governor Rick Perry when Perry was lieutenant governor.

Currently, Garcia is Texas' Deputy Secretary of State. In addition to his many duties, he served as senate liaison for the Governor's Office and as special assistant to the governor on Texas and Mexico border affairs since 2001. Garcia's responsibilities included the management of budget, policy and planning for all border matters and closely working with the Secretary of State's Office on related issues.

Most recently Garcia was appointed by Governor Perry as the Border Commerce Coordinator, where he coordinates trade issues with Mexico and Canada, transportation and border crossing issues, water and wastewater concerns, and electric sales from Texas to Mexico.

Garcia and his wife, Meredith, reside in Austin with their two sons.
