Gymnastics at the 1988 Summer Olympics

Gymnastics at the 1988 Summer Olympics was represented by two different gymnastics disciplines: artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics, held at the Olympic Gymnastics Hall in Seoul from September 18 to September 30. In artistic gymnastics 14 events were contested (6 for women and 8 for men), while in rhythmic gymnastics - one women's event.

[edit] Format of competition

Age limit for male gymnasts was 16 and for female gymnasts - 15; it should have been reached by December 31, 1988.

For the first time in Olympic history each of the routines in women's gymnastics events was judged by six judges, highest and lowest marks were dropped, and an average of four remaining ones was gymnast's score for the routine. Men's routines were judged by four judges, as at the previous Olympics.

12 best teams from the 1987 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships were allowed to compete in the team competition.

Both women's and men's artistic gymnastics competition consisted of three parts:

  • Competition I comprised the team competition and a qualification round for 24 individual competitors from teams, which had not qualified for the team competition.
  • Competition II comprised the all-around finals, entered by top 36 gymnasts from the Competition I.
  • Competition III comprised apparatus finals, each of them was entered by top eight gymnasts on the respective apparatus in the Competition I, and was limited to not more than three competitors per country.

The scoring system was basically the same, as for gymnastics events at the previous Olympics.

[edit] Rhythmic gymnastics

Rules for the rhythmic gymnastics competition also changed since the previous Olympics. Ball apparatus was replaced by rope. 35 gymnasts competed in the preliminary round, its format was similar to the finals. 20 best gymnasts competed in the finals. Competitor's score in the preliminary round, divided by two ("Prelim" value) was added to gymnast's score in the finals ("Final" value).

Each of the routines in was judged by six judges, highest and lowest marks were dropped, and an average of four remaining ones was gymnast's score for the routine.
