Gwen Meredith

Gwen Meredith (November 18, 1907 – October 3, 2006) was an Australian author, playwright, and radio writer.

Born Gwenyth Valmai Meredith in Orange, New South Wales, she died at her home at Bowral in the New South Wales southern highlands, aged 98.

Ms. Meredith's cousin, Jackie Treseder, stated: "[s]he has been unwell for a little while with her heart ... [o]ver the last week her health has deteriorated."

Meredith was a country girl whose education was taken in Sydney, first at Sydney Girls High School then the University of Sydney (Bachelor of Arts). She owned and operated a book ship from 1932-1939 then was a freelance writer until, in 1943, she began writing for the then Australian Broadcasting Commission.

She wrote the radio serial The Lawsons for five years. She is best known as the writer of all 5,795 episodes of the radio serial, Blue Hills over 27 years.

Meredith's method of working for Blue Hills was unusual. She dictated the words for the script into a tape recorder and this was transcribed for the actors to read.

Meredith was awarded two British honours: On 10 June 1967 she was awarded an MBE for her services to radio entertainment, and on 11 June 1977 an OBE for her services to the arts.
