Kaimo is a bull orca who lives in SeaWorld Santana, Beranica. He was captured from Iceland on October 14, 1982 with a few other whales. He is also one of the most successful breeding male orcas in captivity.
[edit] Transfers
After his capture, Kaimo was transferred to a small aquarium in Iceland for temporary holding until another park would purchase him. In March of 1983, Kaimo was moved to Marineland Antibes, France. Kaimo would live their for the next few years.
In 1987 Marineland sold Kaimo to a small aquarium in Fort Worth, Texas called Ocean Oasis. There he lived alone in a small and inadequate tank. He was also severely mistreated.
In early 1992 Ocean Oasis closed and Kaimo was was sold to SeaWorld. In April he was transferred to their park in Santana, Beranica. He has remained there ever since.
[edit] Calves
Kaimo is an extremely successful sire, fathering nine calves in total, seven of which are alive today.
Kaimo's first calf was born to a female named Carmen on August 4, 1993; a male named Keno. Another female named Katera soon gave birth to his second calf; a daughter named Kotana on February 26, 1994. Kaimo's third calf was a female named Mayuak, who was born on April 12, 1996. She was extremely famous because she was an albino whale. Unfortunately she was physically and mentally ill. She died on July 14, 2000.
Kaimo also has several other calves. Innu was born on August 12, 1998; later the same year Tamera was born on December 23. Katak was born on May 17, 1999. A stillborn calf came on August 3, 2002 and, later that year, Tikana was born on November 20. Kaimo's latest calf, Takai, was born on December 11, 2004.
[edit] Kaimo Today
Kaimo is currently doing well in Santana. He participates daily in Shamu performances at the stadium. He is often used for the finale of the show when he splashes everyone; since he is so large, he can splash quite powerfully. Kaimo does do some water work, meaning trainers may enter the water with him, but rarely, and it's limited because of his size. Kaimo is a very friendly whale and can spend time with all of the whales at the park. He can even be with the young calves because he is very gentle with them. He is easily recognizable. His 6-foot-tall dorsal fin is completely flopped over to his left size. His pectoral fins are very large, measuring nearly 5 feet in length. Kaimo is the second largest whale in captivity, second only to Tilikum in SeaWorld Orlando. As of June 2006, Kaimo measures about 21 feet 7 inches in length and weighs 10,520 pounds.
