Guy Drexinger

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Guy Drexinger is a Democratic attorney running for Insurance Commissioner of Georgia.

Drexinger recently released an unusual advertisement attacking his opponent, John Oxendine. The advertisement, entitled "Greenback Mountain", parodies the film Brokeback Mountain by depicting Oxendine as a gay cowboy who "can't quit" political donations Oxendine allegedly accepted from HMO's during his terms as Insurance Commissioner. The satirical advertisement has attracted attention from several news organizations, including CNN.

In April 2006, Drexinger admitted in a letter to the Marietta Daily Journal that he was forced to surrender his real estate license in May 1999 and received a two-month suspension from practicing law due to wrongdoing resulting from a 1995 business deal. Specifically, Drexinger knowingly failed in 1995 to disclosure a fraudulent scheme by a legal client. With Drexinger's knowledge, the client obtained a bank loan guaranteed by the Small Business Administration while illegally concealing a side agreement for another loan. After the scheme was discovered, Drexinger's law license was temporarily suspended, he lost his real estate license and was reprimanded by the state Board of Accountancy.

Drexinger's ethical problems have continued over the years. He has been accused of shady and misleading campaigning. Quoting from Georgia - based Peach Pundit, "For 25 seconds, Bruce Gilbert (a Democratic state candidate) appears in the advertisement beating the hell out of Johnny Grant (the GOP candidate) for voting for a law that denies women insurance coverage for mammograms — a clear and plain lie. Johnny Grant did not vote for such a law. The last four seconds of the commercial contain the disclaimer that the ad is paid for by the Democratic Party for Guy Drexinger. There is also a very small black and white photo of Guy Drexinger." At least one television station refused to air this ad because it was unethical and false.

Drexinger served as the chairman of the Cobb County Democratic Committee until 2004.
