[edit] Gurkhas

Thanks for clarifying the connection between Gurkhas and the Gorkha province in Thailand. Before I changed it to my incorrect claim that it was coincidental, there was a completely opaque and nonsensical analogy to the name of Singapore, which didn't explain anything. I suspected that the issue might be that the province was named for the people, but wasn't sure. Anyway, thanks for making all clear on that front. john k 04:34, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Rajputs/Is nothing sacred

In general, Wikipedia is not a good place for the sacred. You may believe something with every fibre of your being – and perhaps you may even be right – but if another group or party disagrees with you, Wikipedia is not going to take sides. What we do is report that group X says this, but group Y says that. The point is that there will be a presentation of the discussion on all sides – and if you think that group Y's evidence is flawed, you can point out the ways in which it is. And group Y will do the same to you. But the concept of an ultimate truth is foreign to Wikipedia, and so (most crucially) is the idea of anything being too sacred to be critically examined. QuartierLatin 1968 15:46, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your questions, and your kind comments. I admit that I haven't followed the debate on the Talk: Rajput very closely; I have focused mainly on the historical narrative, and left the questions of identity for others. As someone of Yugoslav ancestry, I know that debates on questions of identity often generate more heat than light, and rarely have clear answers; a forum like Wikipedia can present opposing viewpoints on heated questions, but is unlikely to be able to finally resolve or reconcile them.
As to your question, "Does Wikipedia simply allow anyone to put stuff up even if its not backed by authentic academic knowledge or research?" the answer is yes and no: yes, anyone is allowed to make edits, but no, information shouldn't be presented as fact if it is of dubious authenticity or is contradicted by credible evidence, and statements presented as facts should not be allowed to stand if they are demonstrably false. However I am certainly not the best informed on this; there is more information about Wikipedia policies at Neutral point of view, No original research, and Resolving disputes.
Wikipedia is also a forum where virtually everything held sacred to virtually anyone can and will be rigorously examined and thorougly questioned. My outsider's view of the current dispute is that if the parties are looking to the Rajput article to validate their personal sense of their Rajput identity, then the other party is bound to be unhappy. If one's Rajput identity is threatened by Muslims claiming to be Rajputs, while another's Rajput identity is threatened by the assertion that one cannot be both Muslim and Rajput, then this is a question that a wikipedia article is unlikely to resolve, although the article can — and, I think, should — explain the differing views on this question. [edit] Neutrality of the Rajput article

Thanks again for your kind comments. As far as the NPOV tag goes, It was Wisesabre who put the tag up, after the Muslim Rajput clans were removed from the list. He asked that these clans be added back to the article, possibly in a separate list of Muslim Rajput clans; reading through the comments on the talk page, It wasn't clear how that issue got resolved, or whether it was resolved to Wisesabre's satisfaction. You could ask Wisesabre directly, or I could ask him if you like.

I am still concerned about the history; there are still two these two separate sections, and the "Battles between Rajputs and Muslims" section still has an air of "How the muslims played dirty tricks against the Rajputs and coveted their women". That said, there is a good deal of useful information mixed in that needs to be edited, or added to other articles in the instances there is too much detail for this one.Tom Radulovich 16:19, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply

  • I couldnt understand why islam could not have cast's, Prohphet Muhammad(saw) is Qurashi, even the non muslims at that time belived that.
  • Yeah cast system is well rooted in Pakistan, Unfortunately we still have alot of Hindu flavor in our lives (majority of ppl dnt marry outside there cast, which is not islamic)
  • No religion owns any cast, does converting to any religon changes your father?
  • anyways im fed up with this discussion as now you are preparing more arguments, enough is enough, please be polite, I haven't stolent anything of yours.

[edit] Jodhabai

Gorkhali,

Thanks for your kind words, and for the book suggestions. I am not an expert, but it is also my understanding that Jodhabai was a Kachwaha, and the sister of Man Singh. I think I changed a category on the Janjua article a while back, but you should feel free to correct the reference to Jodhabai as you see fit. Tom Radulovich 21:05, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Gurkha

I am happy to help you with any problems you have in Wikipedia's common practices and policies, or whatever else (I know it can be confusing and everyone was new once). I'd like to point out two things that you may not know. We have a policy, that's really an ingrained cultural practice, called "assume good faith." It's basically this: this is an encyclopedia, and nearly everyone is here to help build an encyclopedia– a neutral, comprehensive, trustworthy encyclopedia. Whatever you may perceive as hostility, or any kind of bad faith, it is best to assume that it was a good faith attempt to help, and conflicts will resolve themselves much easier. In this case, it is best not to take any NPOV dispute personally, or think that someone has an agenda, but take them at their word, and you may find you missed something. When someone says an article is NPOv, the claim should be examined from their perspective; it is in no way a weapon. This brings me to our NPOV policy. One of the subtle things that people tend not to catch is that NPOV demands that we neutrally document all points of view, even those we feel to be wrong or even disproven (i.e., to an evolutionary scientist, creationism is unprovable, but both points of view are documented). I think simply striving for both of these may lead to a resolution.

I am not sure I can address the content issues of the article (being myself not knowledgeable in the area) but I can't stress enough that reasoned discussion is always the way to go. Now I wasn't sure what specific help you were asking for, so this may not help at all. Tell me if you had some specific type of help in mind. And I assure you, Wikipedia does welcome honest experts, and you specifically. Dmcdevit·t 21:09, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

I also wanted to let you know that I contacted Bhadani, an editor for whom I have much respect, as he will be much more kowledgeable in the subject area, and orting through POV. Good luck. Dmcdevit·t 19:29, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Rajput

This is a response to the extended diatribe that you left on my talk page.

Even during recruitment, the British looked at the Muslim Rajputs as an inferior breed since they were seen as not having the same stock or fighting spirit as the Hindu or Sikh Rajputs.

With this quotation, you have proven the point of your opponents:

Rajputs are followers of all four major religions of the sub-continent Hinduism, Islam, Christianity and Sikhism.

So I must thank you for ending the debate in their favor. — goethean 14:52, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

From Khurram

I totally respect your views but would like to clear a few things. If we talk about that being a Rajput means that you believe in traditional Hindu Jati system (some are superior and some are inferior just by birth) then surely Islam does not have any place for this. I have talked with many Sikh and Hindu Rajputs/Jatts and they too say that they don't believe in the traditional Jati system and that all the people are equal. Do they also disqualify for being a Rajput? Islam, however, does not stop anyone from being proud of its lineage as long as it does not mean following any unislamic way. The way we Muslim Rajputs see the matter of being a Rajput is that it is the blood that runs in your veins and characteristics that you are told of. I accept that the Hindu Rajputs do have all the right to negate this idea but I think so do the Muslim Rajputs. Also about the argument of thinking of Hindu Rajputs as superior and Muslim Rajputs as inferior, I think most of the British army was composed of Rajputs of the areas of Jehlum, Chakwal and Rawalpindi districts and the first one from the sub-continent to win a Victoria Cross was a Muslim Rajput of Zafarwal. The same legend, we the Muslim Rajputs of Pakistan, carry in the Pakistan Army today. It is however pleasant reading the term "Muslim Rajputs" from you and I think it speaks a lot of itself.

I admit that I have never read the book that you have mentioned but I will try to grab a hold of it. But similarly I think there are many books dating as far back as 1800 that categorize Muslim Rajputs as Rajputs and there was not dispute to that in those times. As far as your Muslim friends are concerned, I don't know where they are from and in what respect did they pass that comment. What I do know is that in both India and Pakistan, there has been a lot of distortion of information to support religious rhetoric and today it is hard to dig down the truth in that fog of mutual haterd.

The point that Raja and myself were trying to make was:

1. We the Muslim Rajputs of Pakistan carry the same blood as our Hindu counter parts and belong to the same tribe. By the definition of tribe we mean "Who your father is" and the traditions that you receive from your fore-fathers. These traditions are not descended through your religion but through your lineage. That is whay Rajputs of Pakistan are though to be brave and esteemed because this is how they are being brought up for centuries.

This is our view about being a Rajput.

What I have understood from your post and that of others is that the only thing that disqualifies people from being Rajput is embrassing Islam since there are many Hindu Rajputs who don't believe in caste system and many who don't believe in Hinduism. There were many great Hindu Rajput kings who spent their lives against the teachings of Hinduism and the code of Rajputs but we don't see them being denied of their title of a Rajput. We even see Sikhs being categorized as Rajputs although their religion is as opposing to the Verna System as Islam is.

Who else can know the importance of a uniform criteria about an evaluation beter than yourself and I think you owe one to yourself and to those who will come after you.

Gorkhali,

Thanks for your message on my "talk" page. Sorry you got tarred with the same brush as Shivraj and his cadre. I confess I am losing interest in editing articles on Indian history here on Wikipedia; there are too many cranky writers and too much chauvinism, revisionism, and bad prose to deal with, so writing articles on natural history and geography seems more productive and enjoyable. [edit] Kalyug

Sumerji, it is really disgusting the comments on you and family. But it is also in character, as you can see from the abuse I am suffering. With this culture and education, people feel equipped to write complex histories! The glory of rajput history shines on its own strength -- it needs no assistance from uneducated bombast or abuse of others. Some people hate muslims, others hate jats -- its a madhouse. Thank you for the encouragement on Rajput. The work is far from done, and I will try my best in future also, but the atmosphere is very non-conducive.

No, I did not write the page on Rajmata Scindia. If I understand right, her grandfather Khadga SJBR and your own great-grandfather were 1st cousins, is it not? Both being nephews to Jang Bahadur Kunwar. Please confirm and let me know exact details -- I'm fascinated by genealogy. I'm wondering if you are related to the Lambagraon family, since Dhwaj SJBR's daughter was wed there. What is the connection with Nabha/Patiala? Two grand-daughters of late HH Mysore are also wed into Nabha. My best regards, ImpuMozhi 02:19, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Relations

Sumerji, I am busy preening and congratulating myself on hitting the bullseye regarding your immediate relatives -- ain't I clever? But of course, I had a lot of help from your postings. You belong to a hoary lineage and extensive family, and can be justly proud of that. Please accept my felicitations. Indeed, if you count the whole Rana family, there is scarcely a royal house that you are not connected with.

I now understand that "3rd prince of Nabha" refers to a brother (not son, as I thought) of the present HH Nabha. So is his wife your 3rd cousin? I'm wondering if her name is Usha RLD or something else. Is she not a sister of the present Maharani of Jaisalmer (another 3rd cousin to you?) You don't say -- and furthermore, the "3rd prince" is the younger brother of Vasundhara Raje Scindia's husband -- her own devar. Am I getting it all wrong? Again, you mention that your mother's bua was HH Patiala's maami. Was her sister (your other grand-bua) married to Rana Hark Jung? I suppose I must be giving too much trouble, but I do look forward to hearing from you, this is vastly interesting to me. Regards, ImpuMozhi 05:56, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Point

Sumerji, I now better understand the implication of the point you made about rajputs not being a race but a caste. This point is that the "lineage" argument, claiming that converts remain rajputs by "lineage", cannot hold because there is no such commonality of blood among standard rajputs anyway. A subtle argument, and worthy of debate, but I do not forsee the faintest chance of any such civilized debate taking place. Atmosphere is vitiated -- the trolls are very persistant, and don't have appreciation for the genuine work that is going on. Maybe being too close to the subject impacts adversly upon the capacity to write upon it. Still, I am sure the article will pick up eventually. Good to know about your family. Why I asked a second time about the name was because I thought it should be Rani Uma RLD, but I can see I was mistaken. Totally irrelevant, anyway. Regards, ImpuMozhi 19:09, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Sumerji, this is a totally Indian thing to happen -- I myself had a distant grand-aunt, very elderly, who was universally referred to as Kittamma-garu (ji). Now this is not an impossible name to have (but very old-fashioned), so I did not think of questioning it. Suddenly one day, I discovered that her actual name was Krishnaveni!! So it happens all the time in India.
I am presently working on Rajmata Vijayraje Scindia. I went to that page after you asked me about it, and found ample scope for improvement. I have based my additions on her autobiography (written with Manohar Malgaonkar). Please read it and tell me if personal details are accurate and whether any amendmants are needed. Regards, ImpuMozhi 21:59, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rajput

The statement is quite meaningless. "who do not normally intermarry with Hindus or Sikhs of any caste" - of course not, they are muslims! "but who may intermarry with Muslims of any caste" - naturally, they are muslims and will marry other muslims, no question of "Caste". "although they usually tend to marry other Muslim Rajputs." Again, unsurprising. In all events, the statement concerns the traditions of Muslim Rajputs and is meant for that page. The entire Rajput page needs copy-edit, and I will take care of it when I am able. Regards, ImpuMozhi 00:58, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Gaddi

I am working on the 'communities' section on Rajput. Mention of muslim-rajputs is of course necessary, but I feel that other non-traditional rajputs, such as Girasias, can also find mention. You are from HP, can you tell something about Gaddi (ethnic group)? The page says that they can be brahmins, rajputs ... I have never heard of them. Please advise. [edit] Believe it or not

Sumerji, Will you please believe me when I say that I until a few minutes ago, I had no inkling that you had awarded me a Barnstar?? God is my witness, this is the case. I never scrolled down to that part of the page, and no message reaches me for changes made to my user-page. You will believe that I would have immediately said my thanks to you if I had known!

I especially treasure this barnstar since it comes from a person of your background, for work I have done regarding a matter that is so personal to you. I feel vindicated in my work, if it receives your approbation. Thank you very much for this reassurance, more than for the Barnstar. My best regards, ImpuMozhi 13:57, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Sumerji, nobody seems to have tasted the intended flavour of my comment regarding Jehangir. My observation may be read, I put it to you, as an allusion to the absurdity of the MR argument. I now realize that not many people may read it like that, and if protests continue, I have no objection to removing the sentence. Also, while rajputs are strongly patrilineal (as I mention in the section on clans), the MR's definitely are not, and my statement referred to MRs's, not standard rajputs. And indeed, I have made explicit mention that Mewar stood out and did not ally with the mughals. I thank you for the support and constructive suggestions and for helping me on the page. Again, there is much work to be done on the page, and I will do it whenever time permits. Regards, ImpuMozhi 18:38, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

If you're interested in other Wikipedians who are in Sigma Chi, you might consider starting a new sub-category of Category:Wikipedians by fraternity and sorority. Other people might look for such a category, but not feel like (or not know how to) create it. If it's already there, you increase your chances of getting people in it. You can then put it on your user page (with [[Category:Category:Sigma Chi Wikipedians]]) so others can find you. You could even link to it in a See also section on the bottom of the Sigma Chi article. And just an FYI, no I'm not. bmearns, KSC(talk) 19:10, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

No problem. To create the category, just click on this link: Category:Sigma Chi Wikipedians and type in a brief description of the category. 6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
Stressbusters
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!

  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.
