Guru Josh
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Guru Josh was a brief star of the early 1990s British acid house music scene, on the back of the 1989 single Infinity (1990s... Time For The Guru) (UK # 5, Ger #2). A track which, in radio edit form, has gone on to feature on a large number of compilations of 'old skool' house music.
Guru Josh was an alias for Paul Walden, who began his career as an entertainer and keyboard player at Sands night club, Jersey, Performing under the name of Syndrone, Later to become.. Animal and His Crazy Organs, Following the release of Infinity, his debut single, he soon fell out of favour with the music press when his album, also titled Infinity, came out. It received near universal disappointing reviews, with some making note of its lackluster covers of Popcorn and Louie Louie. Following this, Walden admitted in an interview that he was a supporter of the Conservative Party which was in power at the time, thus effectively finishing his career, since the government was in the midst of a crackdown on the rave scene which had originally taken to his music.
Guru Josh also had several other singles: Freaky Dreamer, Holographic Dreams, Whose Law (Is It Anyway?) (UK #26, Ger #12) (all from 1990) and Hallelujah (in 1991), although none of them proved to be anywhere near as popular as his first single (and only true commercial success), Infinity, which has been reissued twice. He had more success in Europe and reached No 1 in 10 countries, and made a lot of money.
In 1991 he moved into multimedia production as the driving force and finance behind Dr Devious and the Wisemen, creating the acclaimed Dance In Cyberspace series of videos in collaboration with Darrel Jameson, Guy Labbé, Dave ' Flipping Mental' Evans, Marcus Pennell, and others.
In 2001 the noise music act V/Vm released mangled up versions of Infinity (subtitled No Time For The Guru), Whose Law (Is It Anyway?) and Louie Louie as a 7" single titled Infinity: The VVMCPS Abolish Copyright Anthem.
He now lives in Ibiza.
