Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, also known as GGSIPU or IPU, is a university located in the city of Delhi in India. The university was established by the government of Delhi in 1998 and is recognised by University Grants Commission.
Although initially setup to ease the pressure on centrally funded University of Delhi, the GGSIPU has emerged as a serious alternative to it. Its aim is to facilitate and promote studies & research with focus on professional education in emerging areas of higher education in disciplines of engineering, technology, management studies, medicine, pharmacy, nursing, education, and law. The admission to these programmes are through a Common Entrance Test.
There are more than 70 colleges affiliated to the university which run programmes adhering to the norms and standards set by it. The university is presently situated at Kashmere Gate in Delhi and is housed in the former campus of Delhi College of Engineering. It plans to shift to the new campus land allotted by government of Delhi in Dwarka in west Delhi and Shahdara in east Delhi with modern facilities. Professor K.K. Aggarwal is the first and current Vice Chancellor of the university.
This university is relatively new compared to other universities of India like the Delhi University, Bombay University, Pune University etc. but still manages to attarct students due to its location in New Delhi.
Located near to Old Delhi, the university campus is in the vicinity of hubs like Chandni Chowk and Daryaganj which are practically known as the home for all trade in Delhi. Being in such a vintage location the campus is surrounded by beautiful hertitage buildings like The Red Fort (Lal Quila in hindi) and even Jama Masjid.
With the introduction of the Delhi Metro to the area, commuting has become an easy task to and from the campus. The level of education in the university has often been debated by its own students but is known to be steadily on the rise.
