[edit] Gunshot sound

A typical rifle gunshot is very loud — in the region of 140 to 170 decibels. This can be lowered to around 115 db through the use of a suppressor and subsonic ammunition.

[edit] Gunshot as distress signal

Some doctrines of survival training allow for the use of three gunshots with an interval of one or two seconds as a distress signal. According to such doctrines, however, anyone finding themselves having to do so would be well advised to not hit any vessel or aircraft. Aim wide and well ahead; the "cone" of the gunshot noise will cover a fairly wide angle.
