Gun culture in Pakistan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gun culture in Pakistan is erroneously linked with "terrorism", a misconception which has arisen due to the prevalence of militants in the North West Frontier Province (N.W.F.P.) of Pakistan. Pakistanis (only from NWFP) take pride in owning and using guns for recreation as well as self defence. Guns are manufactured in Pakistani cities like Peshawar. Popular guns include the Russian AK-47 and other handheld firearms.

The gun culture in Pakistan exists due to N.W.F.P.'s geographical positions. North West Frontier Province (N.W.F.P.) is the smallest province of Pakistan with rugged and hilly terrain. Pashtun tribal feuds are common and guns are used for protection and self-defense.

Old customs and cultural norms also promote the gun culture. In N.W.F.P., where the strong and tough Pashtuns reside, carrying a gun or a Klashinkov is a sign of honour and respect. A gun is also considered to be the jewel of a man in N.W.F.P., thus the social necessity emerging as an intimidating component of provinicial culture.
