[edit] Gulfstream V

The Gulfstream V (also referred to as the G5) originally flew in 1995, was certified in 1997, and was one of the first "ultra-long range" (~6000 nautical miles) business aircraft. Capable of carrying up to 16 people in standard seating configurations, and able to fly up to 6,500 nautical miles (10 401 km), the GV became the longest range business jet ever made at the time of its introduction.

[edit] G550

The upgrade of this jet, released to the market in 2003, has better performance and is referred to as the Gulfstream G550 (Gulfstream V SP or GVsp). Range is increased to 6,750 nautical miles (12 038 km), mostly due to reductions in aerodynamic drag. This elevates the Gulfstream 550 to the longest range business jet in the world. Additionally, this aircraft has a "Planeview" cockpit (which consists of 4 Honeywell 21 EFIS screens, and a Gulfstream-designed cursor control system), and an "Enhanced Vision System" (EVS), an infrared camera that displays an image of the view in front of the camera on a head up display. EVS permits the aircraft to land in lower-visibility instrument meteorological conditions than a non-EVS-equipped aircraft. List price for this airplane is about $46 million, and delivery waiting times are greater than one year.

This aircraft may be distinguished from the legacy Gulfstream V by a seventh passenger window on both sides of the aircraft.

[edit] G500

The G500 is a shorter range version of the G550, also introduced in 2003. It has the same exterior appearance, as well as the Planeview cockpit, but does not have EVS as standard equipment, although it is available as an option. It also has less fuel capacity, reducing its range to 5,800 nautical miles. It has a list price of $38 million.

The Gulfstream 550 competes against the Airbus Corporate Jet, Boeing Business Jet, and the Bombardier Global Express.

[edit] Military usage

Gulfstream Vs and 550s also operate in the U.S. Air Force, under the designation C-37.

A Gulfstream V is in service with the American CIA, which is known to have been used for the "extraordinary rendition" of terrorist suspects.

Recently, a version of Gulfstream V was acquired by the Israeli Air Force for use as AEW&C and SIGINT platforms.
