Gudvangatunnel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gudvangatunnel (or Gudvanga tunnel) connects the village of Gudvangen (Aurland municipality, Sogn og Fjordane county) at the head of the Nærøyfjord with the Undredalen valley and is part of European route E16.

At 11,428 m in length, it is Norway's second longest road tunnel. It was opened on December 17, 1991.

500 m after the eastern end a new tunnel begins, the Flenja tunnel, 5,053 m long, and another one 1 km after that, the Fretheim tunnel, 1 363 m. 7 km further east the Lærdal tunnel starts, 24.5 km long (plus one 700 m tunnel before). This means that there is 43,0 km tunnel on a 51,5 km long section of E16.

In railways, the Bologna-Florence high speed line in Italy runs in tunnels for 73,8 km over a 78,5 km route. There are five tunnels between 10 and 18 km in length, and some other between 0,5 and 5 km. In Switzerland, the new Gotthard railway, partly under construction, would run mainly in tunnel between Zürich and Chiasso, about 150 km over about 190 in total, the longest being the Gotthard Base Tunnel, 80 km planned, of which 57 km are under construction.
