Talk:Guatemalan Party of Labour
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Name
Why not Guatemalan party of work, which is a better of translation of trabajo? also why spell labour as we British do when the article is written in American? Or am I missing something? --SqueakBox 20:44, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)
- I doubt there is any party in the world whose name is translated into English as "Party of Work." The sources I consulted when I wrote the essay this article is derived from almost always used "Labor/Labour" instead of "Work" or "Workers'". —Seselwa 01:34, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
How about Guatemalan Workers' Party or Guatemalan Labor Party. Do Americans spell the word Labour sometimes like Brits always do? --SqueakBox 01:49, Apr 1, 2005 (UTC)
My observation is that those spellings have recently gained some currency here among people frustrated with our government's policy. —Seselwa 01:57, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
[1] talks of Guatemalan Workers Party which I think is a much better translation. [2] calls them the Guatemalan Labor Party, which I again much prefer to the current version which feels clumsy, but this would need an admin to change it. Certainly in this context trabajo could just easily translate into labor. [3] is workers party again [4] is labor again, so it is fairly even between these 2 names. as an encyclopedia I believe we need to use one of these two names, and not the one we have, which no-one else seems to call the PGT. -SqueakBox 02:04, Apr 1, 2005 (UTC)
In my experience "obrero" would be the adjective to induce the translation "workers'", as in Partido Socialista Obrero Español (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party). Guatemalan Labor Party already redirects here, so I don't see a pressing need to change the title. PGT is not well-known enough to have a universally used English-language translation, in contrast to, for example, Brazil's Partido dos Trabalhadores (Workers' Party; literally Party of the Workers/Laborers). —Seselwa 04:42, 1 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I do prefer Guatemala Labour Party, what do others think? --SqueakBox 14:46, Apr 1, 2005 (UTC)
I would just like to say that it is quite possible to convey the severity of anti-Communist repression in Guatemala without the POV tone this article currently has. J. Parker Stone 05:19, 16 July 2005 (UTC)
