Guardic

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Guardic is an action game for the Japanese MSX computer, designed by Compile, the creators of the long-running Zanac series. Like Zanac, Guardic is a shooter, even starring characters like the Blue Lander (Compile's unofficial mascot, which starred in a multitude of Zanac games).

However, Guardic distinguishes itself from its more straightforward cousin by allowing the player to explore each stage, made from a series of interconnected rooms. Guardic also allows the player to select the speed of the ship and its complement of weaponry before each alien encounter, a sharp contrast to Zanac with its more traditional power up system.

Guardic was not a hit, and this quirky shooter was never released outside the country of Japan. However, it did inspire a cult classic, the beloved NES shooter The Guardian Legend (known as Guardic Gaiden in Japan).
