[edit] History
Located at 8 Bishan Street 12, Guangyang Secondary School started as Kiong Yong High School on Yio Chu Kang Road. In 1986, due to a sharp drop in school enrollment, Kiong Yong High School closed. In 1987, the School Advisory Committee of Kiong Yong High School left a sum of about $60,000 which was to be given to a school that adopted its name. When a new school was set up in Bishan, it was decided that the old dialect name "Kiong Yong" be used. Hence, the new school came to be known as "Guangyang" which is the hanyu pinyin equivalent of "Kiong Yong". In its early months, Guangyang Secondary shared the premises of Zhonghua Secondary School and subsequently moved to Bishan.
The school was officially opened on 27 June 1990 under the helm of her first Principal, Mr Leong Khin See.
The school's second Principal, Mrs Alice Tan Lee Huan, started in 1993. Under her leadership, Guangyang Secondary School achieved the distinction of being one of the Top 18 Value-Added Schools in the Special/Express stream. In 1996, Mrs Ng-Ong Phiak Kim took over, and the school was ranked as one of the Top 20 Value-Added Schools in the Special/Express Stream for the next two years.
In December, the school underwent renovation and was shifted to Toa Payoh for rebuilding to take place at its present site.
In 2003, the Singapore Ministry of Education announced that Guangyang Secondary School and Braddell-Westlake Secondary School would merge in 2006. The secondary one cohorts of both schools collaborated to produce a ceramic mural wall to be installed in the new merged school in early 2005.
[edit] School crest
The Guangyang crest symbolises the pupils of the school illuminating the world with their radiance, like the morning sun rising over the vast ocean. The strength of the sun brings forth life, radiating integrity, courage and steadfastness. The Guangyang spirit carries the school confidently to the future where they will make an impact on society. The school will touch lives and excel in whatever they do.
