Grytting
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grytting is a village in Hadsel municipality, Norway. It is located approximately between the towns Stokmarknes and Sortland, and just south of Gjerstad. Cross country skiing and ski jumping is a common sport for the inhabitants. It contains two ski jump hills and a 3,5 kilometre prepared ski track. There was a local school there until 1989, but it was closed and is now used as a kindergarden. Elbjørg has a home bakery there, and her bread is known locally to be one of the best in that area. In the viking era there was a large settlement, and only some ruins is left today, and you will need a local to guide you there since it is quite hidden. The only thing you can see if you take a good look around is some old viking graves around the Lunnan area. The reason why it was inhabited so early, is because there is a lagoon, perfect to have boats in when the weather is bad, and the wildlife includes fresh water fish (trout, salmon), sea fish (cod, coalfish, crustacean), grouse and moose. Still today it is an attractive area to fish and hunt in. If you plan to go there to fish/hunt; be sure to purchase a license first. Most of the inhabitants there is either into agriculture or fish industry. One horse centre is located there as well (Grytting Hestesenter og hovslager), just across the road of Elbjørg's home bakery.
