Grumpy's Three Wishes

Grumpy’s Three Wishes, written by Peter Sauder, is the second episode in the Care Bears Family Storybook series. It originally aired on September 20, 1986 on the ABC network.

While the Care Bear Family is busy trying to stop No Heart, Grumpy Bear finds an eight-leaf clover that can grant him three wishes, and afterwards begins to give confidence to a black boy named Alvin. He and the boy are then left alone by the others to protect Care-a-lot from the villain's wrath. As Grumpy is not good at wish-making, an unexpected string of events happens once he uses those wishes.

The Care Bears are going on Missions in Caring once again one day, to stop No Heart from spreading his evil to the world. Joining in are Brave Heart Lion and Champ Bear; Secret Bear is telling them when to go with the rest of them. Meanwhile, Cheer Bear is astonished to find how much wrong there is in the children she watches, with Funshine Bear typing out her findings.
Tenderheart Bear is working inside the Caring Headquarters, along with Noble Heart Horse and the Cubs (Hugs and Tugs) to handle this extreme mission. As Grumpy, Wish and Good Luck are riding on their Cloud Mobiles, Tenderheart reminds the first one that he is supposed to assist in the woes of a boy named Alvin.
After all three Bears have crash-landed on Earth, Good Luck tells Grumpy that he has found an eight-leaf clover in front of him! Even more is in store, as Wish Bear tells him: it will grant him three wishes once it is used. But Grumpy objects, and after the other two leave him, he complains on why he always helps people who share the same emotion with him. Yet he reconsiders using the unique talisman anyway.
Meanwhile, Good Luck and Wish encounter two young children—a boy and a girl—painting graffiti on a wooden fence in town. The Bears activate their Stare on the children and their shadows, and the latter wonder what has come over them. They both apologise, but Good Luck tells them the fence needed a good whitewashing, just before his symbol alerts him of the next Mission. He reminds them to keep caring, and they say "good-bye" to him.
Grumpy’s client, Alvin, is carrying a heavy bag before he hears his bully, Freddie, asking him for his football equipment. Seeing the situation, Grumpy quickly comes in front of the bully, stopping him in his tracks. If only to save Alvin, the Bear uses his first wish, telling him as such to go away. Freddie magically does so, and Grumpy soon realises it has worked all because of the special clover.
Alvin only wishes he could make wishes like his new friend did, but Grumpy advises that he can do anything—if only he can believe it and put his mind to it. Yet Alvin doubts he can achieve such because of his age. On the contrary, Grumpy adds, there are "little guys" where he comes from—Care-a-lot.
Then, as soon as the Bear produces a Cloud Mobile with his Stare, Alvin marvels at the sight. Grumpy invites the boy to meet his friends way up in the sky as both ride on it.
Meanwhile, Beastly is bickering about the evil that is spreading all over the Earth. But his boss, No Heart, has even more serious intentions: to destroy the Care Bear Family and let his evil spread much further, thus getting rid of all that is good. With this objective in mind, they set off.
Soon after the boy and the Bear arrive at Care-a-lot, Noble Heart comes down in a balloon to inform them both of No Heart’s wickedness. Stepping off it, he tells Grumpy to keep an eye on things at the place, while the rest of the Family are away.
Alvin figures that the Family left Grumpy behind because he is a runt like him. Suddenly, followed by Beastly, No Heart arrives from out of nowhere, as a ram, and Grumpy tries hard to make a wish himself to stop him—but currents of wind blow his talisman off his hands, making it disappear, and Grumpy has immediately run out of luck.
When he finds it, he makes a wish to be Super Grumpy, and is not affected by No Heart literally butting him. Alvin cheers at his victory, but the defeated villain is outraged: he insists that Beastly find out what Grumpy’s secret power is. After he has gone, Alvin congratulates Grumpy on beating their foe as a "little guy".
Over in town, No Heart’s shadow commands two children to steal another girl’s groceries. Brave Heart Lion and Champ Bear are seeing it before their eyes, up above from their Mobiles, before coming down to use the Stare on the vile children. As if that were not enough, Tenderheart informs them of another mission somewhere else downtown. Reminding the corrected children to keep caring, they move on.
Back at Care-a-lot, Grumpy wonders what he can do against No Heart without his powers. This leads to his big mistake: he uses up his last wish on the clover with this in mind! Because the villain is coming back in a while, he can do nothing now about it.
Beastly, glad about Grumpy’s self-defeat, heads back to No Heart’s castle and tells him about that loss. No Heart, in return, reiterates his plans to destroy Grumpy and Care-a-lot.
At the Hall of Hearts, Grumpy starts to run away, far from the Care Bear Family and their cloud-filled home. As he realises his error, he admits that he has let everyone in the Family, even Alvin, down. But running away will not help, he himself decides; then, looking back, he agrees on the advice he gave Alvin earlier on.
No sooner does the Bear unpack his suitcase than Alvin returns. As far as the villain is concerned, he declares, all is now safe. But Grumpy has a secret to tell him: the clover’s magic guided him on the brink of victory, not him! Despite this, he is determined to still put an end to No Heart whenever he comes, so that Care-a-lot can be saved.
Walking out the door, Grumpy is made aware of the villain’s presence by his client. Destroying a rainbow to smithereens, he turns back into a ram, and a nervous Grumpy acts as a bullfighter in order to take him down. It is not long before Alvin saves him from the raging ram, both landing in the clouds. But, as they try to escape from No Heart, Grumpy gets caught up with the villain, trying to keep him busy.
Transforming back to his true form, No Heart (Beastly cheering him on) activates his amulet right before Grumpy and Alvin. A moment later, the rest of the Care Bear Family come to their rescue, using their Countdown and Stare in full force; Grumpy joins them likewise to defeat No Heart. The villain cannot take it any longer, and he disappears in a flying whirlwind; his assistant too departs in his flying contraption.
The Family, coming back down atop the clouds, ask what has happened to Grumpy. He replies to them, saying he was doing his duty to protect their home from No Heart’s wrath, along with Alvin—unlikely and unbelievable for the Bears and Cousins, because of their size!
[edit] Mistake
The normal Baby Tugs Bear can be seen riding on a Star Buddy outside the Caring Headquarters in one shot early in the episode. But, upon entering the building, he turns from light blue to brown.

The music for one of the Bears’ earlier songs, Fuzzy and Furry, can be heard in the background after Grumpy finds the clover.
