Growth in membership of the European Parliament

The membership of the European Parliament has grown from 78 in 1952 to its current maximum limit of 732. The earliest ancestor of the parliament was established as the 'Common Assembly' of the European Coal and Steel Community, in September 1952. The body has been known by its current name since 1962.
