Groningen University Theatre Society
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Commonly known as GUTS, the Groningen University Theatre Society is an amateur theatre company attached to the English department of the University of Groningen in Groningen, The Netherlands. It is run by students, who act, direct, and make up the Board.
For production year 2006–2007, GUTS is producing two plays: Lips Together, Teeth Apart by Terrence McNally, directed by Niek Groenewold; and Graham Holliday's The Scottish Play, directed by Cees Krottje and Jeannet van Dalen. The plays will be performed in February and May 2007 respectively.
E.S.C. Drama Society was the original name for the Groningen University Theatre Society from its founding sometime before 1968 until 1978. The new name was settled upon in 1980, after a one-year spell of simply being known as "the Drama Society of the English Department".
Its earliest beginnings, as the E.S.C. Drama Society have been traced back to 1968, when Everything In The Garden by Giles Cooper was performed. GUTS puts itself to perform at least one play per academic year, a number of which are listed below.
Some of the better-known plays performed by GUTS since 1968:
- Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen
- Table Manners by Alan Ayckbourn
- The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
- Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard
- Equus by Peter Schaffer
- Appointment with Death by Agatha Christie
- The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare (Abridged) by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield of the Reduced Shakespeare Company
- Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel
- Popcorn by Ben Elton
- An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde
- Blue Remembered Hills by Dennis Potter
In a number of instances, GUTS has adapted or written original works. These include:
- "Bloomsday", a collection of scenes adapted from sections of James Joyce's Ulysses
- The Son of the Morning, a comedy written and directed by Lolu Ajayi and Cornelis Krottje
- Christmas Pantomime and From The Ivory Towers, both credited to GUTS as a whole.
