The Grogs, in the Known Space, are sessile furry cones, which can control animals telepathically. The Grogs turn out to be the descendants of the Thrint species, after two billion years of degeneration.

They currently inhabit the planet Down and are seen as enough of a threat by the human population of Known Space that a Bussard ramjet is kept in orbit around the planet for sterilization in the event that they take action against other races.
