Grindon, Sunderland

Grindon is a suburb of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, in the United Kingdom.

Located two to three miles to the west of the city centre along Chester Road, Grindon is a densely-populated area of Sunderland. It includes a wide-variety of housing, from modern, newly-built estates and massive post-war housing projects, to prefab bungalows that were built to house people whose homes were bombed during World War II.

Grindon houses 2 pubs, namely The Grindon Mill and The Gleneagles, formerly The Sandhills. In 2004 the electoral ward of Grindon was changed to include Thorney Close and is now known as the Sandhill Ward, a primarily labour controlled ward. There is also The Grindon Broadway social club which has played host to many famous acts including Bobby Thompson (the little waster) and Roy "chubby" Brown. It is also Home to 4 churches, The Holy Family Catholic church, St Oswalds Church, The Grindon United Reform Church and the Bethany Memorial Church.

The population of Grindon is approximately 10,000. Making it now the largest estate in the city.
