[edit] Background
Director Rodriguez began filming Planet Terror in Austin, Texas in March 2006. Director Tarantino began filming Death Proof in August 2006. The first ever footage was shown at 2006's Comic Con and then was aired a few months later, on October 10, 2006, on Spike TV's Scream Awards. Rodriguez and Tarantino were also honored with awards.
"The world is not ready for this movie." -Tom Savini at a Q and A session in Pittsburgh
[edit] Fake trailers
Between the two segments will be trailers advertising fake films. Tarantino has stated that fake trailers will be shot for a blaxploitation film, a kung fu film, a sexploitation movie and a Spaghetti Western film. Tarantino confirmed that he will be directing the trailer for the sexploitation "film" Cowgirls in Sweden. In an interview with Danny Trejo, the actor said that he will be in a fake trailer for a movie called They Call Him Machete. Trejo's other characters in Rodriguez movies have also had names similar to knives, such as Razor Charlie in From Dusk Till Dawn. [1]. In addition, Eli Roth (who is also planning to make a cameo in the film[2]) and Edgar Wright have been confirmed to direct fake trailers.
[edit] Confirmed actors
It has been confirmed that Kurt Russell will be playing the part of the slasher named Stuntman Mike in Death Proof. Rosario Dawson and Mary Elizabeth Winstead also have roles in the film.[3] At the 2006 Scream Awards on Spike TV, Tarantino and Rodriguez showed random footage from Grind House, footage confirming that Tom Savini has a lead role in "Planet Terror". IMDB has confirmed Naveen Andrews of ABC's Lost, Rosario Dawson, Rose McGowan, Michael Parks, Eli Roth, and Kurt Russell.
[edit] Musical score
Rodriguez revealed at Comic-Con 2006 that inspiration for his score came from music composed by John Carpenter. Rodriguez said that during the filming of Planet Terror, Carpenter's music was often played on set.[4]
[edit] Recent shooting
As of Monday 9/25 at 6:00pm, the crew is shooting a scene for Death Proof in north Austin on Howard lane west of Metric, and contains a billboard for a fake radio personality, Jungle Julia, in the background. Wednesday through Friday, the crew was filming at the corner of 620 and Great Valley Dr., just west of Lakeline Mall and contains another billboard for a fake film Potheads 2.
On Friday 9/29, they were shooting at Lamar Blvd and Brentwood.
They were also filming at a convenience store at the corner of RM620 and Lakecreek Parkway in far Northwest Austin on Friday 9/29. In front of the store was parked a 1969/70 Dodge Charger painted flat black with a duck for a hood ornament. The hood ornament was an exact duplicate of the one used on the Rubber Duck's big-rig in the movie Convoy http://convoyduck.com/. Parked to the side were 2 more identical black Chargers. Stuntman Mike's black Dodge Charger has a license plate that reads 938 DAN, this is the same license plate number as the Dodge Charger in the cult classic car chase film Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry There was also a yellow (1971) Mustang Mach 1. Filming went on most of the afternoon.
On the morning of Monday, Oct. 2, filming was at The Omelettry, a diner on Burnet Rd. at 49th St. Filming is continuing through Oct. 3 at this location. In front of the restaurant is the yellow Mustang Mach 1. This is the same model as "Eleanor" the yellow and black Ford Mustang Mach I featured in H.B. Halicki's cult classic car chase film Gone in 60 Seconds.
