Grimmjow Jaggerjack
Occupation 6th Espada in Sōsuke Aizen's army

Grimmjow Jaggerjack (グリムジョー・ジャガージャック?) (sometimes romanized as Grim Jaw Jaguarjack and variations) is a character in the manga series Bleach.

Grimmjow is the 6th Espada in Sōsuke Aizen's army of arrancar, meaning he is the 6th strongest arrancar. After Kaname Tōsen cut off and burned his arm, Grimmjow was no longer a member of the Espada, having been replaced by Luppi. After Orihime Inoue healed his arm, he killed Luppi to regain his rank.

[edit] Character outline

Grimmjow looks somewhat like an older Tōshirō Hitsugaya and has a similar mentality to Kenpachi Zaraki. He has the remains of his hollow mask on his right cheek, has light blue hair and his eyes have blue/green lines below them that are similar to the red marks on Ikkaku Madarame's eyes. His attire consists of a ragged white jacket with black inner lining, sleeves rolled up and the collar turned up. The jacket is left open, revealing his chest, a white hakama, and a black sash. As with many other arrancar revealed thus far, the hole that should have been on his chest has moved, in Grimmjow's case to the abdomen. The importance of this, if any, is unknown.

A crooked number 6 is tattooed on Grimmjow's back just above the hollow hole on the right side. Aizen personally marks the Espada, the ten most powerful of his arrancar, with such tattoos of their respective ranks. The tattoo serves as proof of their rank and power. It had been removed with Grimmjow's loss of rank, and was covered in scar tissue. However, after being healed by Orihime, the scar tissue has been removed once again revealing the tattoo.

Grimmjow is the first character revealed as an Espada in the series. His menos class before becoming an arrancar is unknown. He is a seemingly laid back and irreverent individual, but also has a very short temper and is very impulsive. He appears sadistic, carrying a smile of insanity whenever he becomes excited. Grimmjow also seems to say whatever is on his mind regardless of whether or not it is appropriate or rude.

He appears to be on bad terms with Kaname Tōsen, who carries him in the same regard as Kenpachi Zaraki. He also seemingly has a bad relationship with Ulquiorra, another arrancar Espada. He has also developed a grudge against Ichigo for wounding him in their first fight and seems to be itching to get even with him.

[edit] Synopsis

After Ulquiorra reports his findings on Ichigo Kurosaki and other possible threats in Karakura Town, Grimmjow clashes with him concerning Ulquiorra's course of action. Ulquiorra had ordered his companion, Yammy, to eliminate everyone they deemed as trash, including Orihime Inoue, Chad and Tatsuki Arisawa. Although Ichigo had been labelled as trash as well, Ulquiorra chose to leave him alive, rather than killing him. Although the appearance of Yoruichi Shihouin and Kisuke Urahara may or may not have influenced this decision, Ulquiorra believed they maintained the upper hand.

Grimmjow believed that Ulquiorra should have eliminated Ichigo on the spot rather than waste time waiting to see if Ichigo would eventually become useful to Aizen. To rectify what he believes to be a mistake, he leads a group of five other arrancar (D-Roy, Edorad Leones, Il Forte Grantz, Shawlong Qufang, and Nakim) to the material world. Their orders are to kill anyone with even the slightest spiritual pressure.

D-Roy is quickly dispatched by Rukia Kuchiki; Edorad has a close fight with Ikkaku Madarame but is eventually defeated when he reveals his final release (bankai); Il Forte, Shawlong and Nakim are all defeated by Renji Abarai, Tōshirō Hitsugaya and Rangiku Matsumoto respectively after their limits are lifted. The five killed are later revealed to have originally only been gillian-level menos, meaning they are merely peons as far as the menos ranks.

Grimmjow himself takes on Ichigo Kurosaki shortly after he severely injures Rukia by putting his hand through her stomach. As Grimmjow is about to draw his zanpakutō, Tōsen interrupts the fight and takes him back to Hueco Mundo to determine his punishment for breaking orders and getting five other arrancar killed. When Grimmjow refuses to take responsibility for his actions, Tōsen requests permission to execute Grimmjow, but the request is denied. However, he proceeds to cut off and completely burn up Grimmjow's left arm anyway, much to Grimmjow's surprise. Although Grimmjow threatens to kill Tōsen, Aizen stops him before he can proceed any further. Ulquiorra later points out Grimmjow was demoted from the Espada because he lost his arm, saying the same would have happened to Yammy had his arm not been re-attached.

Later, as Ulquiorra leads a second attack on Karakura Town, Grimmjow accompanies 2 Espada and the arrancar Wonderwice, where he again runs off on his own to confront Ichigo a second time. Ichigo releases his hollow form crossing swords with Grimmjow and blasts him with a black Getsuga Tenshō at point-blank range. Despite his injuries, and the damage to his sword, Grimmjow continues to fight unreleased. The tide turns as Ichigo reaches his time limit, his mask breaks; and Grimmjow slashes him across the chest, hurling him downwards. On the ground, the battle continues, with Grimmjow maintaining the upper hand even when Rukia attempts to surprise-attack him. With Ichigo disabled and Rukia about to be delt a final blow, Shinji Hirako shows up and stops him. After a brief struggle, Grimmjow is stopped on the verge of releasing his sword by Ulquiorra. A Negación beam surrounds Grimmjow and Ulquiorra and takes them back to Hueco Mundo.

After Orihime arrives at Hueco Mundo, she is ordered by Aizen to display her abilities by healing Grimmjow's arm. After she restores his arm, Grimmjow orders her to handle one more thing, restoring the 6 tattoo to his back. Immediately afterwards, he reassumes his rank by impaling Luppi with his arm and then destroying his upper body with a cero.

During an Espada meeting concerning the invasion of Ichigo Kurosaki, Yasutora Sado and Uryū Ishida, Grimmjow tries to leave in order to take care of the problem, but is forced to return to his seat by Aizen.

[edit] Zanpakutō

The name of Grimmjow's zanpakutō is still unknown, due to the fact he was initially capable of fighting Ichigo's final release (bankai) with nothing but his bare hands, and later withstood Ichigo's hollow form using only an unreleased sword. In his first battle with Ichigo, Tōsen interfered just as Grimmjow was going to draw his sword. In his second battle Grimmjow is stopped yet again, this time on the verge of release, as he begins to call his sword out with the command word "kishire" (軋れ, grind!).

His sword's guard resembles that of a crooked 's', the sheath and handle are light blue.

[edit] Trivia

  • Tite Kubo has mentioned that he modeled Grimmjow after members of the American metal band Slipknot. The 's' shape of his zanpakutō's tsuba could be a reference to this.
  • Grimmjow can be seen in the opening theme for episode 94 of the anime with a half-crescent moon imposed behind him on the background. There are some appearance changes in the anime adaptation, including a slightly different hair color.
  • Grimmjow is featured on Bleach volume 24's cover, Immanent God Blues.
  • Grimmjow will be appearing in the game Bleach Wii: Shiraha Kirameku Rinbukyoku as a playable character as well as in the upcoming Bleach: Heat The Soul 4 for the PSP.
  • Its obvious he doesn't have the respect for Aizen Sosuke that other arrancar do and only follows him due to fear of being executed.
