The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is a brass band formed in 1917 as a leisure activity for the workers at the colliery. The band itself is widely considered to be one of the finest bands of its type in the UK, and regularly wins competitions. International fame came with the film Brassed Off which was loosely based on the band's winning performance at the 1992 UK National Brass Band Championship, and whose soundtrack was recorded by the band itself.

Until recently the company was sponsored by UK Coal[1] with an £80,000 annual grant. In March 2006, the grant was withdrawn.

The band's most recent contest success was in October 2006 when they won the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain in the Royal Albert Hall, London.
