Grigore Cugler (1903-1972) was a Romanian avante-garde writer and musician, considered a polymath.
Cugler's paternal family was descended from the Austrian architect Karl von Kugler, while his maternal family was descended from a long line of boyars in Romania. Cugler knew eight languages; German, Romanian, Spanish, French, and Arabic fluently. He wrote above all in Romanian. Before the Second World War he was likewise celebrated in Romania as a representative of the literature avant-garde alongside figures like Urmuz and Tristan Tzara. He was also a prominent musician. Cugler often wrote political satires.
