[edit] Wiki activities

While I have made at least one significant contribution to Wikipedia and numerous general edits, the majority of my MediaWiki and wiki community experience is not here, but on Wikia, where I am founder and administrator of two popular wikis. I am also making a presentation at Wikimania 2006 on the creation and maintenance of such community wikis.

[edit] Wikia: Creatures Wiki and WikiFur

I am heavily involved in the Creatures Wiki and WikiFur, for which I am respectively co-founder and sole founder. Creatures Wiki (launched at the start of 2005) reached 2000 articles in September 2005, while WikiFur (launched July 2005) reached that level on 30 October 2005. Both wikis were are among the top ten Wikicities by database size as of October 2005 (prior to the name change to Wikia), at which time I had made approximately 8500 edits on Creatures and 4000 on WikiFur. They were also featured on 21 February 2005 and December 2005 respectively.

Creatures Wiki was mentioned in a Wall Street Journal article about Wikicities - I still contribute irregularly, although I believe it has now achieved a point of incremental improvement (unless a new Creatures game comes along). I intended to bring WikiFur to the point where it was deserving of a Wikipedia article; as of August 2005 that time was (in my view) not yet there, but it seemed that in February 2006 it was . . . until its deletion in November. It, too, was mentioned in the press (Pittsburgh City Paper), but it seems this was not sufficient.

[edit] Wikipedia

A significant proportion of my time on Wikipedia has been spent on the expansion and creations of articles related to Stardock, my current employer. In particular, these articles and most of their "children" in Template:Stardock were largely my work as of October 2005:

However, I'm not just here specifically to write about things related to where I work - I enjoy being on Wikipedia, and take the opportunity to contribute to it in the rare moments when I'm not busy working on one of my other wiki projects. Examples include:

  • The addition of Visual Basic .NET to Template:Major programming languages, which was disputed, and which resulted in a complete rewrite of the article.
  • Defense of Template:Subarticleof (which was eventually merged to a similar template and later deleted - well, I tried! :-)
  • Addition of links between WikiFur and Wikipedia where I think they will actually be of use
  • Samuel Conway (what happens when I spend a weekend seeing how well I can write a biographical article)
  • The creation of furry convention, in an attempt to head off further creation and deletion of articles about the smaller furry cons

If you wish to discuss my contributions with me, feel free! If they relate to the appropriateness of Stardock articles or WikiFur links, you might want to check out this discussion first.

[edit] Wikimania

I was a speaker at Wikimania 2006, where I gave a presentation on techniques for building, managing and promoting collaborative communities to around 50 people. It seemed well-received and I had a great time there in general.

[edit] Philosophy

NG This user's alignment is Neutral Good: the "Benefactor."
F This user is a furry.

Generally speaking, I am an inclusionist and eventualist; I believe that it is better to have information here than nowhere, though if there is a better place for it I would suggest moving it. I founded WikiFur for precisely this reason - I believed there needed to be a place for the knowledge of the furry fandom, but that Wikipedia was not (and should not) be it. This belief appears to have been correct; over 1000 articles were added to WikiFur in the first whole month after it was founded (August 2005).
