King Biscuit Flower Hour: Greatest Hits Live (1997) |
Then & Now (1998) |
This is a compilation live album by the progressive rock supergroup Emerson, Lake & Palmer. It features tracks from two different tours: The 1973 Brain Salad Surgery Tour, and the 1977 Works Tour.
Almost all the tracks included here had been released before on other live albums: The five songs from the Brain Salad Surgery tour were originally included on the 1974 triple Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends, and four songs from the Works tour had appeared before in 1979, on the setlist of In Concert. In Concert was re-released in 1993 as a two-disc set under the title Works Live, adding seven new tracks. Two of those seven have been included here too. That makes eleven tracks.
The other four tracks are recordings available for the first time on an album: A new piano improvisation by Keith Emerson, a Carl Palmer solo, and performances of "Fanfare for the Common Man" and "Pirates". The version of "Fanfare" included here is a performance without the orchestra the band used on some concerts during the tour. One version with the orchestra is available on Works Live. Also, the recording of "Pirates" is, maybe, the unique registered live recording of the track during the Works tour. It does not feature the orchestra either.
