Greig, New York

Greig is a town in Lewis County, New York, USA. The population was 1,365 at the 2000 census. The town is named after landowner John Greig.

The Town of Greig is in the southeast part of the county.

The town was settled around 1796. The town was formed in 1828 as the "Town of Brantingham" from the Town of Watson. In 1832, the name was changed to "Watson." The Town of Lyonsdale was formed from the south part of Greig in 1873.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 244.3 km² (94.3 mi²). 240.6 km² (92.9 mi²) of it is land and 3.7 km² (1.4 mi²) of it (1.51%) is water.

The east town line is the border of Herkimer County, New York, and the west town line is defined by the Black River. The eastern half of the town is inside the Adirondack State Park.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,365 people, 533 households, and 386 families residing in the town. The population density was 5.7/km² (14.7/mi²). There were 1,260 housing units at an average density of 5.2/km² (13.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.90% White, 0.07% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, and 0.59% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.59% of the population.

There were 533 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.6% were married couples living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.4% were non-families. 21.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 99.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $35,179, and the median income for a family was $39,028. Males had a median income of $32,596 versus $22,857 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,838. About 4.7% of families and 8.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.7% of those under age 18 and 10.8% of those age 65 or over.
