Gregory J. Newell

Gregory J. Newell, born August 30, 1949, in Geneseo, Illinois. United States Ambassador to Sweden 1985-1989.

Newell attended the Church College of Hawaii in the '60s and in the '70s he attended Brigham Young University. In 1982 Newell was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs.

Newell is a Latter Day Saint. [1]

When nominated to the ambassadorship to Sweden, Senator Joseph Biden expressed reservations over the choice of the nominee with the following words:

"I find it difficult to be sending an ambassador to Sweden who doesn't know how many countries are in NATO." [2]
