[edit] History
Greenside mushroomed at the turn of the twentieth century; originally just a few scattered cottages along Woodside Lane and the Lead Road, it became the largest colliery community in the district.
[edit] Etymology
The name Greenside is of recent coinage; Woodside, Long Row, Folly and Kyo being older names which represent long established communities. [1]
[edit] Economy
Farming and coalmining (on a smaller scale) have been traditional occupations of most residents, but the main village bears the stamp of a coal community from the boom years around 1900.
[edit] Geography
The Greenside district is hillier and more rural than those closer to the main Tyne valley and contains some interesting and historic farms.
