Greenhill, Edinburgh
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Greenhill is a small area of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.
South-west of the city centre, Greenhill is normally taken to be part of Bruntsfield, which continues to the north. Greenhill borders Marchmont and The Grange to the east. Morningside is south. It comprises a mixture of Georgian and Victorian villas and some tenement housing.
The Greenhill name derives from the former estate of Greenhill, which included the Burgh Muir (see Burghmuirhead). A stone carving depicting the former manor house may still be seen on the wall of a tenement house at the corner of Bruntsfield Place and Forbes Road.
The tomb of John Livingstone, former Laird of the estate, is owned by the local authority and the public have right of access to it from Chaimberlain Road. It was once in the grounds of the manor but now lies adjacent to a private villa.
