Greenfield is a city in Highland County, Ohio, along Paint Creek. The population was 4,906 at the 2000 census. It was the birthplace of country singer Johnny Paycheck.

Greenfield is located at 39°21′6″N, 83°23′11″W (39.351623, -83.386461)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.0 km² (1.9 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 4,906 people, 1,955 households, and 1,253 families residing in the city. The population density was 981.5/km² (2,536.3/mi²). There were 2,099 housing units at an average density of 419.9/km² (1,085.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.78% White, 2.20% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.69% of the population.

There were 1,955 households out of which 31.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 85.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,805, and the median income for a family was $36,952. Males had a median income of $32,156 versus $21,352 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,306. About 12.3% of families and 15.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.5% of those under age 18 and 13.6% of those age 65 or over.
