Greenfaulds, Cumbernauld
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Greenfaulds is an area of the town of Cumbernauld in Scotland. It is located in the southwestern part of Cumbernauld, where a long, three-lane main road curves through the entire Greenfaulds area from the town's central road interchange, dividing the north and south sides of the area. This division is further marked by differences in housing. The north side of the Greenfaulds main road comprises what were traditionally "council" houses, i.e. monotonous but functional apartment blocks and terraced row-houses, all owned by national social security. The south side of the road comprises a number of estates of privately owned houses, all with gardens, garages, and for the most part individual designs. All the streets in the Greenfaulds area are named after characters from the writing of Sir Walter Scott, eg Locksley Avenue, Ashestiel Place, Melrose Road, Ivanhoe Crescent.
Greenfaulds has its own train station on the Glasgow to Cumbernauld Line and the Motherwell to Cumbernauld Line. The long main road has traditionally been well served by buses. Greenfaulds is home to the second largest high school in Cumbernauld, Greenfaulds High School, as well as a primary school and a school for children with special needs.
Greenfaulds was constructed in its entirety beginning in the mid-1970s. The building continues; a local industrial zone was recently (around 2000) bulldozed to make way for new houses opposite Cumbernauld fire station. In the 1970s, a sports centre stood on the same site.
Leisure facilities include a bowling green, a small community centre and a pub called "The Swan" (previously known as "The Mallard"). In the past the area also featured a forest BMX track (now overgrown) and a children's playpark (now vandalised to dereliction). Greenfaulds contains a Church of Scotland church and a Mormon church. Ivanhoe Road hosts the family-sized international student accommodation for the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.
Greenfaulds suffers, mildly, from gang related vandalism (as does Cumbernauld as a whole), and graffiti can be found on the underpasses and public buildings. The local gang, the Greenfaulds Young Team, are less renowned for fighting than others of their kind in Cumbernauld. As in the rest of Cumbernauld, the primary schools of the area have had their three foot wire mesh fences replaced by six foot metal fences for increased security.
