Greenbush Line
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Greenbush Line is a planned branch of the MBTA Commuter Rail system.
Restoring train service along the New Haven Railroad's Greenbush Branch, it is to run 18 miles from downtown Boston, Massachusetts through the towns of Braintree, Weymouth, Hingham, Cohasset, and Scituate on the South Shore of the Greater Boston area. Construction of the line began in 2003, and it is scheduled to open for service sometime in 2007. The extension of MBTA rail service along this branch is intended to ameliorate the increasing levels of automobile and public transportation (boat and subway) congestion that have affected south shore commuters in recent years.
The project has not been free of controversy; residents of some communities initially opposed it on the grounds that it would increase noise levels and aesthetically mar the neighborhoods through which the new rail service was to run. As a result of these complaints, the MBTA has taken several measures to reduce the environmental impact of the Greenbush service, including constructing a $40 million, 800 foot long tunnel under downtown Hingham.
The proposed station stops (following South Station) are: JFK/UMass, Quincy Center, Weymouth Landing, East Weymouth, West Hingham, Nantasket Junction, Cohasset, North Scituate and Greenbush.
