Greenbriar Mall
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Greenbriar Mall was the second enclosed mall in the Atlanta region and the first to serve the southern suburbs of Atlanta. The mall is located in Atlanta, just north and west of the East Point city proper, at the intersection of I-285 and the Lakewood Freeway (Langford Parkway/State Route 166).
Opened in 1965, the mall was originally anchored by Rich's and JCPenney. The mall was also notable as being the location of the first Chick-Fil-A, which opened there in 1967. While Greenbriar Mall continues to thrive, much has changed since its opening. White flight in the 1970s and 1980s combined with the opening of Southlake Mall in Morrow in 1976 transformed the mall from a superregional center serving largely white customers into a mall almost exclusively serving the African-American community.
While the mall itself was never expanded, much has been invested into the center to keep it viable. The Magic Johnson Theaters opened on an outlot to the mall; Circuit City was built onto the center (which has recently closed and moved to the Camp Creek MarketPlace, just three miles to the south) and when JCPenney left (presumably in 1996 to the Shannon Mall location), Upton's quickly took over the former location. Rich's, now Macy's, also remains an anchor to the center with a large three-story store. In addition, Burlington Coat Factory also now fills the space of the former JCPenney/Upton's, and occupancy rates remain high in the center.
The mall is mentioned in the Ludacris song "Blow it Out," where he said he would be looking into buying the mall (whether or not he actually went through with it has yet to be confirmed).
