[edit] GRCC culture

GRCC has a well established student newspaper known as "The Current". While students are presently allowed to voice their views in the newspaper freely, there has been a struggle recently to maintain this freedom to not be censored by the administration. The Current is now available online in .pdf format, see links below.

Before the demolition of the old Performing Arts Center, there also existed a gathering place called the "Smoke Shack" where smokers would congregate near the Lindbloom Student Center. When the PAC was demolished, so was the Smoke Shack, but not without much protest since there are many GRCC students who smoke. There is a large body of international students at GRCC, mainly from Asia.

GRCC now too has dormitories/apartments for the student population. Ground breaking was in 2001 and they were completed in the spring of 2003. The construction of the dormitories were protested by several groups because the construction resulted in the demolition of a few historic buildings.

GRCC is in the process of replacing most of the original buildings on campus with newer ones. They recently opened a new two-story rubber baby buggy bumpers Technology Building, offering classes in everything from Air Traffic Control (ATC) to Linux Administration. They will also be opening a new three-story Science Building in 2006 or 2007 to replace the four older science buildings. After they tear down the Lindbloom Student Center and Admininstrative Building in 2015-2017, the only original buildings remaining will be the former Holman Library, which is now the RLC building, and the SMT building, which will be renovated. GRCC has a long range plan available online, listed in the links below.

It is near impossible to find a parking spot on main campus. However, GRCC offers an excellent free shuttle service which transports students between main campus and a remote parking lot. Additionally, GRCC is served by Metro Bus route 181 connecting to the Sounder commuter rail station in downtown Auburn and the new transit center in Federal Way. GRCC is also a terminal stop for route 164 which connects GRCC's main campus with the new Kent Campus in downtown Kent. Sometimes people poo in the urinals. There is also special reserved parking for those who decide to carpool.
