Green (Pokémon)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Green(ブルー) is a fictional character in the manga series Pokémon Adventures. She is a wily, underhanded con artist, who begins as a minor character but later becomes a friendly ally to the heroes.

Originally, the manga followed the adventures of the character named Red and mainly chronicled his journey of discovery from Pallet Town to becoming a Pokémon Master. The story was true to the spirit of the original game and therefore included the rival character Blue, which coincides with the default names that the player could choose in the original Game Boy games, and the names of the games themselves; Pokémon Red and Blue. In those games, when a player started their adventure, the player has a choice of one of three Pokémon; Bulbasaur, Squirtle or Charmander.

In the Pokémon Adventures, Red chooses Bulbasaur as his rival Blue chooses Charmander. Some older concept art by Ken Sugimori depicted a third trainer who took the third Pokémon, Squirtle, but this was never implemented in the games. In Pokémon Adventures, Squirtle was taken by a third, female, character who would, in time, become Green. It may be that the female version of the main character in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen was based on Green from Pokémon Adventures, as Green is based on the concept art from the Red and Blue versions, and the gender feature was finally added.

It is interesting to note that she, Red, and Blue appeared in the original American Red and Blue pamphlets with their starter pokemon (she had her Squirtle, Red his Bulbasaur, and Blue his Charmander) but few knew who she was and she had her back to the reader. Also, in the beginning of the first anime series Pikachu runs between her legs (again, to the confusion of American viewers-she was never seen in the anime and was not explained, many thought she was just a Lass.)

[edit] Name confusion

In the Japanese version of Pokémon Adventures (known as Pokémon Special), the young girl described in this article is instead named Blue, and Red's rival from Pallet Town is instead named Green, matching the way the names are used in the Japanese versions of the games. When Pokémon Adventures was localized into English, however, Green and Blue switched names, as Pocket Monsters: Green was never released in English, but Pokémon Blue was.

[edit] Red, Blue and Green saga

When Green first appeared in the manga, she was a minor character who attempts to trick Red out of his money by selling fake items. Red beats her easily, but she seems to have anticipated this and tricks him again by stealing his gym badges. Apparently she stole her starter Pokémon, Squirtle, from Professor Oak, on account of not being able to legally obtain it, as she was kidnapped long ago by Ho-oh. For this reason, she knew she could never have a Pokédex, nor her own Pokémon, because no one knows she is from Pallet Town, so no one would find reason to offer these gifts to a stranger. As the series progresses, however, she decides to team up with the other Pallet Town trainers, Red and Blue in order to defeat the gym leader Sabrina, her nemesis.

Green returns again later in the saga, having become a competent Pokémon Trainer in her own right, as she qualifies for the 9th Pokémon League Tournament. She progresess through the tournament and even makes it into the semifinals, but she is defeated by Professor Oak. Green explains her problem, and Professor Oak takes pity on the poor girl. He then gives her the third Pokédex and forgives her for stealing his Squirtle.

[edit] Yellow saga

In the Yellow Saga set two years later, Green is a sort of "shadow" trainer, trailing Yellow. It is revealed that it was Green who sent Yellow to save Red from danger, but her motives remain ambiguous. In the third volume, it shows that she had been snatched at the age of five by a mysterious bird Pokémon, which gave her a debilitating phobia of this type of Pokémon. Green thinks the Elite Four are responsible for this disaster. She still carries a grudge against the Elite Four into the Gold, Silver, and Crystal Saga when she sends Silver out to stop Lance on her behalf.

[edit] Gold, Silver, and Crystal saga

In the GSC Saga, Green doesn't appear until volume thirteen, where she is shown at the Pokémon Gym Leader's Tournament. She is apparently the partner of Silver, and has a platonic relationship with him, though Silver seems to harbor romantic feelings toward her. She and Silver had escaped from the grasp of the Mask of Ice at a young age, while others abducted along with them, namely Will, Karen, Shum and Cart remained and became the Mask of Ice's servants. Her ornithophobia is resolved when it is revealed that the bird that abducted her so many years ago was the legendary Pokémon, Ho-oh. Green confronts Ho-oh and overcomes her fear. She is also one of the six trainers who helps out in the final battle against the Mask of Ice.

[edit] FireRed and LeafGreen saga

In the FR/LG saga, Green teams up with Red and Blue to rescue Professor Oak and her parents, who have been kidnapped by the evil Psychic Pokémon Deoxys, and taken to the Sevii Islands. It is here that (her Blastoise) , whom she names Turtley, learns the powerful water attack Hydro Cannon and her Jigglypuff, Nidorina and Snubull all evolve into their final forms.
