Greek City-States- The ancient, oligarchic forms of government that were found in Greece, from c. 700 BCE to 196 BCE. They were typically small scale and contained no more than 50,000 citizens. Usually allied in small confederations, such as the Delian League and Spartan League, they are often considered the birthplace of democracy because they allowed citizen to take part in the Government. The Roman Republic and Carthaginean Republic, as well as the early American government, were based on them.
